Em 11 de novembro, a polícia local prendeu Xitumul, repórter da mídia digital independente Prensa Comunitaria, na província oriental de Izabal da Guatemala, disse ao CPJ Jorge Santos, chefe da organização nacional de direitos humanos, Unidade de Proteção de Defensores de Direitos Humanos da Guatemala. O jornalista estava cobrindo os protestos da associação de pescadores da área contra a Companhia Guatemalteca de Níquel desde o início de 2017, disse Santos. Ontem, um tribunal do município de El Estor de Izabal acusou Xitumul de incitação ao crime, ameaças e detenções ilegais relacionadas à sua suposta participação nos protestos de 4 de maio, de acordo com Santos e o site de notícias on-line El Periodico. Ambos, Santos e Andrea Ixchíu, colega de Xitumul na Prensa Comunitaria, disseram ao CPJ que Xitumul estava cobrindo os protestos para a mídia, identificou-se claramente como repórter e não estava participando das manifestações. “Cobrir protestos não é um crime”, disse o vice-diretor executivo do CPJ, Robert Mahoney. “Os jornalistas na Guatemala devem ser capazes de informar sobre questões de interesse público sem temer retaliações. Solicitamos às autoridades guatemaltecas que libertem imediatamente Jerson Xitumul Morales e retirem todas as acusações contra ele”. A prefeitura de El Estor não respondeu aos telefonemas do CPJ nem às solicitações por e-mail para que comentasse a questão. Funcionários locais e funcionários da empresa de mineração haviam assediado Xitumul desde maio por sua cobertura dos protestos da associação de pescadores contra a empresa de mineração, de acordo com Ixchíu. Os pescadores culpam a empresa pelo dano ambiental em torno da área do Lago Izabal, disse Ixchíu. Um juiz local, Edgar Aníbal Arteaga López, emitiu originalmente em 11 de agosto um mandado de prisão para Xitumul, juntamente com outro jornalista da Prensa Comunitaria que também cobriu as manifestações e cinco pessoas envolvidas na organização dos protestos, de acordo com as informações da imprensa. As autoridades locais prenderam duas pessoas envolvidas na organização dos protestos, além de Xitumul, disse Santos. Ontem, Arteaga ordenou que Xitumul permanecesse em prisão preventiva em Puerto Barrios, capital da província de Izabal, até sua próxima audiência, prevista para fevereiro de 2018, de acordo com Ixchíu. Ixchíu disse ao CPJ que os colegas e a família de Xitumul estão preocupados com sua segurança na prisão, que também abriga membros de gangues. Em uma entrevista em vídeo filmada fora do tribunal depois da audiência de ontem, Xitumul disse que estava “pagando o preço por expor a verdade”.
